Walmart+ is $98 a year. You can skip paying it two different ways if you know what to stack.
Path one: the Amex Platinum gives you a $12.95/month statement credit to cover a Walmart+ membership. That’s the exact retail cost ($12.95 × 12 = $155.40 — Walmart bills annual subscribers $98 but monthly subscribers more). Enroll once, the credit fires automatically each month. And for active duty, the Amex Platinum’s $895 annual fee gets waived under SCRA or MLA, so the whole stack costs $0.
Path two: pay for Walmart+ outright if your card doesn’t cover it. Sometimes worth it. Here’s what you actually get beyond free shipping.
What Walmart+ actually includes
Free next-day and two-day shipping with no minimum is the headline. The rest is where the real savings hide:
- Paramount+ Essential — full subscription, no ads on most on-demand content, NFL on CBS, UEFA Champions League, plenty of movies. Retail: $7.99/mo, so $96/yr in value.
- 10¢ per gallon off fuel at Walmart, Murphy USA, Sam’s Club, Exxon, and Mobil stations. For a household pumping 50 gallons a month, that’s $60/yr.
- Mobile scan-and-go at Walmart stores.
- Free delivery from Walmart on grocery orders over $35.
- Early access to deals and new product drops.
Add it up: roughly $156/yr in retrievable value for a household that drives, streams, and shops at Walmart. For an Amex Platinum holder, it’s all net — the $98 fee is already covered by the monthly Amex credit.
How to claim it if you have the Amex Platinum
- Log into your Amex account and open the Platinum benefits page.
- Find the Walmart+ statement credit and click enroll.
- Open Walmart+ separately (walmart.com/plus) and start a monthly subscription at $12.95/mo.
- Pay that subscription with your Platinum card.
- The $12.95 credit should post within one billing cycle. Verify on your statement.
The monthly charge is critical — Walmart+ annual plans don’t trigger the Amex credit because the credit is $12.95/month, not a lump sum. Monthly is the only way.
If you don’t have the Amex Platinum
$98/yr feels steep for something you might only use a couple times a month. But if you drive more than 250 miles a week and watch anything on Paramount+, the Paramount + fuel math alone covers the fee for most active-duty households.
If you’re leaning toward the Amex Platinum anyway for other benefits, the Walmart+ credit is one more reason to pull the trigger — and the full breakdown lives in our Amex Platinum guide.
What to watch for
- Paramount+ Essential, not Paramount+ with Showtime. If you want Showtime content you’ll upgrade and pay the difference.
- Fuel discount requires the Walmart+ app at the pump. Scan the QR code on the pump or enter the membership ID in the app before you pay.
- 10¢ off Exxon/Mobil is newer — verify at your station before relying on it. Murphy and Walmart gas stations are the core footprint.
- Amex credit is enrollment-required. It won’t fire if you haven’t clicked the enroll button. Clicking it once is enough — it stays enrolled until you opt out.
