🏥 Healthcare Benefits
VA healthcare, mental health services, prescriptions, vision care, wellness programs, and medical discounts for veterans and service members.
VA Healthcare: Your Earned Entitlement
Any veteran with an honorable or general discharge is eligible to apply for VA healthcare. Priority groups 1–8 determine your copay level — veterans with service-connected disabilities often pay $0 for all care. To enroll, apply at va.gov/health-care/apply, call 1-877-222-8387, or visit your nearest VA medical center. Enrollment is completely separate from a disability rating — you do not need a disability claim open or approved to use VA healthcare.
TRICARE for Active Duty and Military Families
Active duty service members are automatically enrolled in TRICARE Prime, which covers medical, dental, and prescriptions at no out-of-pocket cost. Military families choose between TRICARE Prime (on-installation, free), TRICARE Select (off-installation, low-cost), or TRICARE for Life (for retirees over 65, paired with Medicare). Understanding which TRICARE plan applies to your situation is the most important healthcare decision most military families make during their service years.
Mental Health and Crisis Resources
The Veterans Crisis Line is available 24/7: call 988 and press 1, text 838255, or chat at veteranscrisisline.net. These lines are staffed by veterans — not automated systems. Beyond crisis support, Vet Centers offer free individual and group counseling, PTSD and MST treatment completely outside the main VA system at over 300 locations nationwide. No appointment, no enrollment, and no VA registration required.
Prescriptions and Pharmacy
VA pharmacy copays range from $0 (service-connected conditions) to $5–$11 per 30-day supply — far below retail. Active duty pay nothing. TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery provides 90-day supplies at reduced cost for retirees and dependents. The TRICARE formulary covers most common medications; ask your provider about formulary alternatives if a brand-name drug is prescribed.
