Capital One’s military program is generous — for pre-service accounts. If you open the Venture X before you go active duty, they waive the $395 annual fee, cap your APR at 4% (better than the 6% statutory floor), include spouses and dependents, and extend the waiver one year past separation.
If you open it one day after your active duty start date, you get zero of that. Capital One enforces the pre-service requirement more strictly than any other major issuer.
The one-day rule
Community data points going back years are consistent: Capital One denies SCRA waiver requests when the account-open date is after the active-duty start date by even a single day. There are reports of denials for spouses whose account was opened before their marriage but after the service member spouse’s active-duty start — Capital One traces eligibility through the primary cardholder’s service, not the account open date alone.
Practical translation: if you’re thinking about Venture X and you know you’re heading active within the next 6-12 months, apply now. Once you’re in, the door closes.
What’s included when the timing works
- $395 annual fee waived — permanently, for the life of the pre-service account.
- 4% APR cap on purchases and balance transfers (beats the SCRA 6% floor).
- $300 annual travel credit (redeemable through Capital One Travel).
- 10,000 bonus miles per anniversary (worth ~$100 toward travel).
- Priority Pass unlimited.
- Hertz President’s Circle status.
- No foreign transaction fees.
For a pre-service qualifying holder, you’re getting roughly $700 of annual value at $0 net cost, extending at least through your full enlistment period plus one year.
How to enroll
Online via Capital One’s military page or by calling 1-855-CAP1-MIL. Capital One will auto-verify via DMDC for MLA status (even though MLA waivers aren’t available here — they use the same pipeline). For SCRA, provide orders or an eligibility letter.
What Capital One doesn’t waive
- Cards opened during active duty. No MLA waivers, full stop.
- Business cards. Not covered under either statute.
- Discover cards (newly acquired May 2025). Currently routed separately via 1-844-DFS-4MIL. Future integration may tighten Discover’s historically pre-service-only policy further toward Cap One’s strict model.
Retroactive refunds
If you held a Capital One card before active duty and never requested SCRA protection, you can file retroactively. Cap One mails actual refund checks for fees paid during periods when you would have been eligible. The paperwork is straightforward — submit orders covering the retroactive period, Capital One calculates and issues the refund.
For active-duty members who held Cap One cards years ago without claiming SCRA, this alone can be worth thousands.
Bottom line
The Venture X is a great card. The Capital One military program is generous. The combination only works if you plan the application timing carefully. Apply before active duty begins, not during.
For cards that work either way, see the Military Credit Card Stack guide.
