The Military Credit Card Stack: 5 Cards With $0 Annual Fees That Pay You Thousands Per Year
There’s a soldier at Fort Bragg holding five premium travel credit cards. Pays $0 in annual fees. Those cards would cost a civilian $2,985 a year. Centurion Lounges, Hilton Diamond, Marriott Platinum Elite, and thousands in annual credits — on top of his BAH.
Not a hack. A federal law most active duty members have never been told about.
The two laws you need to know
The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) caps interest rates at 6% on debts opened before active duty. Some issuers waive fees under SCRA as a goodwill move — discretionary, not guaranteed.
The Military Lending Act (MLA), expanded to cover credit cards in 2017, prohibits charging active duty servicemembers a Military Annual Percentage Rate above 36%. Annual fees count toward that rate — so American Express and Chase waive them entirely on cards opened while you’re on orders.
SCRA covers pre-service accounts. MLA covers accounts opened during active duty. Open these cards while on orders. That’s what triggers the waivers.
The 5-card stack

|---|---|---|---|
| American Express Platinum | $895 | $0 | $600 hotel credit, $400 Resy dining credit, $200 airline fee credit, $200 Uber Cash, Centurion Lounge access, Global Entry/TSA Pre credit |
| Hilton Honors Aspire (Amex) | $550 | $0 | Free Diamond status, $400 Hilton resort credit, airline fee credit, Priority Pass |
| Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant (Amex) | $650 | $0 | Free Platinum Elite status, $300 Marriott dining credit, 85,000-point free night certificate |
| Chase Sapphire Reserve | $795 | $0 | $300 travel credit, up to $500 in Chase Travel hotel credits, Priority Pass, 3x on travel and dining |

Why hold all five
Amex Platinum is your airport card. The 2025 refresh raised the fee to $895 and loaded credits to match: $600 in Fine Hotels + Resorts credits, $400 Resy dining, $200 airline fees, $200 Uber Cash. Burn those and the card has paid for itself before you earn a point.
Hilton Aspire gives you Hilton Diamond without earning a single night. Complimentary breakfast for two, suite upgrades, executive lounge access at every full-service Hilton. The $400 resort credit splits across two semi-annual periods; one TDY stay covers the first $200.
Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant covers the entire Bonvoy portfolio: Westin, Sheraton, W, St. Regis, Ritz-Carlton. Marriott Platinum Elite means lounge access, room upgrades, and an 85,000-point free night certificate annually. Redeemed at a Westin or W on a trip you’re taking anyway, that’s a $300–500 night at $0.
Chase Sapphire Reserve is your daily driver. The $300 travel credit hits Uber, tolls, and parking. Points transfer 1:1 to United, Hyatt, and Southwest. The Reserve also carries up to $500 in “The Edit by Chase Travel” hotel credits — two $250 credits for prepaid stays of two-plus nights. That’s $800 in credits on one card at $0 annual fee.
Chase Sapphire Preferred earns into the same Ultimate Rewards pool as the Reserve. The signup bonus (typically 60,000–80,000 points) drops directly into that pool. Add a $50 hotel credit and 3x on dining. Fee waived. No reason not to hold it.
How to get the waiver
American Express
Amex checks your SSN against the MLA database at application. If you’re eligible, the fee adjusts automatically. Check your statement 30–60 days after the annual fee posts. If it hasn’t been waived, call the number on the back of the card and ask for an “MLA annual fee waiver.”
Chase
Chase won’t find you. You have to call.
- Call Chase Military Specialists at 1-800-235-9978 (or 1-318-340-3308 from overseas).
- Request the SCRA/MLA fee waiver on each Chase card separately.
- If the first rep doesn’t know what MLA is, ask for a supervisor.
Once your active duty status is confirmed, Chase waives the fee going forward and may refund the current year.
Apply for Chase first. Chase’s 5/24 rule blocks approval if you’ve opened 5 or more cards across all issuers in the past 24 months. Amex is more lenient. Get both Chase cards before touching any Amex card.
Don’t apply for all five at once
Every application is a hard credit inquiry and temporarily lowers your score. Five in a month can trigger denials.
A workable timeline:
- Month 1: Chase Sapphire Reserve
- Month 3: Chase Sapphire Preferred
- Month 5: Amex Platinum
- Month 7: Hilton Honors Aspire
- Month 9: Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant
Nine months. Five cards. Nothing alarming to an underwriter.
Pay the balance in full every month. The MLA waiver kills the annual fee. It does not kill interest. Carrying a balance costs more than you’ll earn in points.
What free elite status actually gets you
Without these cards, you’d need 60 Hilton nights to earn Diamond and 50 Marriott nights to earn Platinum Elite. With the Aspire and the Bonvoy Brilliant, you have both on day one.
Hilton Diamond: Breakfast for two, suite upgrades, executive lounge access, 100% points bonus. Breakfast runs $25–40 per person. Five TDY nights with Diamond and you’ve saved $250+ in meals.
Marriott Platinum Elite: Lounge access, room upgrades, 50% points bonus, and the annual 85,000-point free night certificate. Redeem at a Westin or W during a trip you’re taking anyway — $300–500 night at $0.
The spouse situation
Spouses aren’t covered by MLA on their own accounts. Add yours as an authorized user on the Amex Platinum. They get their own Centurion Lounge access, Global Entry/TSA Pre credit, and Priority Pass — and the authorized user fee is waived. Two people, full lounge access, two Global Entry reimbursements. North of $500 before either of you boards a plane.
Things that can trip you up
Active duty only. Reservists and Guard members on Title 10 orders of 30+ days may qualify. If you’re not currently activated, the protections likely don’t apply.
MLA only applies at account opening. If you opened these cards before joining, SCRA governs — not MLA. SCRA waivers are discretionary. Open new accounts while on orders.
Your credit score matters. Both the Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve expect FICO scores above 700.
The Amex Platinum refreshed in 2025. The credits are different from older guides — higher value, different categories. Verify current benefits before applying.
The short version
Five cards. $2,985 in annual fees. All waived. Centurion Lounges, Hilton Diamond, Marriott Platinum Elite, and over $1,700 in annual credits — at $0 cost.
Space applications over nine months. Chase requires a call to 1-800-235-9978. Amex handles it automatically. Pay the balance every month.
Most servicemembers don’t know this protection exists. The banks aren’t rushing to tell you.
