🎓 Education Benefits
GI Bill, tuition waivers, online courses, certifications, and education software discounts for veterans and service members.
GI Bill: Which Chapter Fits Your Situation?
The Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) pays tuition directly to the school, provides a monthly housing allowance based on the school’s zip code, and a $1,000/year book stipend — 100% benefit after 36 months of active duty. The Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30) pays you directly (~$2,400/month in 2025) and is more flexible for part-time or online study. Veterans with dependents should also check the Fry Scholarship (for surviving dependents) and DEA Chapter 35 for spouses and children of permanently disabled veterans.
Tuition Assistance While on Active Duty
Each branch of service offers Tuition Assistance (TA) for active duty members — up to $4,500/year for the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force; $3,500/year for the Coast Guard. TA is completely separate from the GI Bill and does not reduce your GI Bill entitlement. Use TA first while on active duty; preserve GI Bill for after separation, when the housing allowance makes the biggest financial difference.
MyCAA for Military Spouses
My Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) provides up to $4,000 in tuition funding for military spouses of active duty members in pay grades E-1 to E-5, W-1 to W-2, and O-1 to O-2. Eligible spouses can use funds toward associate degrees, certifications, and licensing programs at accredited schools. Apply and manage funding at MySECO.osd.mil.
Certifications and Software Discounts
Tech certifications (CompTIA, Cisco, AWS) frequently offer military discounts of 10–50% on exam vouchers. Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud are available free or heavily discounted through programs at military installations and many partner schools. Filter to the Software subcategory below for currently active offers.
💡 Education Tips for Veterans
- GI Bill Covers More Than Tuition: Post-9/11 GI Bill pays tuition, a monthly housing allowance (BAH rate for E-5 with dependents), AND up to $1,000/year in books. At many state schools it's a full ride.
- Yellow Ribbon Program: If your school costs more than GI Bill covers, the Yellow Ribbon Program tops up the gap — the VA and your school split the difference. Full list at va.gov/education/yellow-ribbon-participating-schools.
- SkillBridge — Get Paid While Interning: DoD SkillBridge lets you work for a civilian company for up to 180 days before separation while still receiving full military pay. Over 500 partner companies participate.
- State Tuition Waivers: Many states offer free or heavily discounted tuition at state universities for veterans — especially those with service-connected disabilities. Check your state's veterans affairs site.
- Chapter 31 Voc Rehab: VA Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31) pays for education or training PLUS housing allowance for veterans with service-connected disabilities — even if you've already used GI Bill benefits.
